Send a message to the person who requested a photo of the grave monument of James Archibald Crichton with the following comment:

The Rifles a follow on Regt of the Rifle Brigade hold his sword which we had recently restored to parade standard and is now worn by one of our officers who is an instructor at RMA Sandhurst. We hold very little information on Capt Crichton. The Rifle Bde Chronicle of 1956 states: Captain the Hon James Archibald Crichton was the fourth son of the Fourth earl of Erne. He was born 1877, educated at Eton and the RMC Sandhurst. Gazetted to the regiment 16th February 1898, promoted Lieutenant 16 December 1899, captain 22 January 1902. Served with the 4th Battalion and Mounted Infantry in South Africa and received the Queen’s medal with five clasps. He retired on 22 January 1902. During the First World War he served on the Staff both at the War Office and in France. He was awarded the DSO and mentioned in Despatches. He died on 3rd August, 1956 at Jannaways, Bagnor, Newbury aged 79 years.A brother officer writes:-“ I knew Jim Crichton in the First World war when serving with the 1st Battalion. He was not only a most delightful personality but a very gallant one.In 1915 at Ypres when the Battalion was largely made up of recruits, they came under heavy shell fire and Crichton set a wonderful example of coolness and bravery walking about among the men.” Any information you have on him would be welcome.J-D v M
